Grown Up Moment

There are moments in my life that feel really big, really important. And the thought comes, "This is a grown up moment, I can't believe I'm a grown up." Paying my first utility bills - grown up. First car purchase - grown up. First real job with a 401k - definitely grown up. The greatest grown up moment in my life came two weeks ago - BUYING A HOUSE - when did I get so grown up? Apparently, September 12, 2014 - when this little beauty became mine.

It has FANTASTIC bones! A great brick home built in 1958. Super large windows for its time AND good size walk-in closets in not one, but two bedrooms.

I have a giant front/living room. And a giant window. I love them both. Though the windows are original so I will be replacing them soon with better double-paned ones.



You can see the dining area from the entry way and living room. The hutch seen here I bought from the prior owner, the dining table I did not. Also, the giant random living room mirror will be removed.

The dining area has an arcadia (sliding) door to the backyard. I plan to replace it with french doors.

Kitchen. It will most definitely be updated. But I am grateful for the sink - super deep and heavy duty. No dishwasher yet but a great sink.

Another great thing about the house, two full bathrooms. Its amazing how many old homes in central Phoenix only have one bathroom or one and half bathrooms.

The bathrooms will also be getting a makeover. Like the kitchen they are dated but still in great condition, well taken care of by the previous owners.

I want grass, trees and a trampoline. Also on the far left of the house, that last tiny window is a storage/workshed. Currently it only holds my washing machine. We have some plans for that room.

So another cute point about the house, I'm only the second owner! The original owners passed away and left the home to their daughter. She painted it, re-carpeted and immediately put it on the market. The very first day on the market I saw it on my lunch break and put in my offer that night. I have always wanted an old home, I definitely didn't think I'd start with my first home though. But the fact that it is more than a half a century old makes me so happy. And it was definitely well loved and well taken care of. I found a terrific first home, such a blessing.

I have some big plans for the place, some painting, updating, a few built in shelves, a garage. Its exciting. I'm grateful to have a really helpful dad and helpful supportive family. So without further adieu... welcome to my home!

Downtown Durham

I barely had time to drive home from the airport and change and my ride was there for Fourth Friday. A couple puts together an activity for the young single adults in the stake every 4th Friday of the month. This month it was a Durham Bulls game, minor league baseball.

Britt and my ride Jenny, super sweet girls.  

 First, we had dinner overlooking the baseball diamond. They almost cancelled the game due to weather but then they started. I stayed for all nine innings for one purpose and one only - 

FIREWORKS!!!!

 Every Friday home game, win or lose, they have fireworks they set off right on the field, its perfect!

It still seems like magic everytime, inspires awe and wonder, and makes life feel beautiful. I truly love them!

So after an amazing Friday night I wanted to do something fun on Saturday too. I also really wanted to see a certain guy again. So Jenny invited everyone downtown again for a Southern staple, Chicken 'n Waffles.

More specifically, DAME'S Chicken & Waffles.

 We had in total 14 people and it is a tiny place, so we put our names on the list and sat down to wait...

 ...and wait...and wait...

 We waited almost TWO HOURS. We told them to put us at different tables, we didn't care. They let people in before us that came after us. Needless to say I was a little ticked by the time we got seated (and in the end they didn't even seat us together.)

I included this pic because my hair looks so pretty and shiny and to show our cute waitress with her rag bow.

 Blueberry waffle with apricot smear and fried chicken. I can't lie it was HEAVEN!

 It really was AMAZING, I forgot all about the wait and my frustration and was filled entirely with happiness. Food has never done this to me, it was incredible. Every combo comes with a HUGE side and because I want to try all Southern food, I got the grits with cheese and butter.

Can't lie, didn't really love them, the texture got to me. Though I'm glad, I tried them and the Southerners with me, said they were the best they've ever had, so I'm glad I know for sure, it wasn't the grits, its me. I did try Camilla's mac 'n cheese and that stuff was GOOD!

PS In case you're wondering about the guy, I mentioned above, he didn't come, but really once I started eating I didn't have a care in the world!

It was a successful North Carolina weekend.

BILTMORE

The LARGEST privately owned home in the United States.

Built by George Washington Vanderbilt II in 1895 in what is now Asheville, NC.

The home is 175,000 sq. feet and originally 125,000 acres of land. The family now owns a mere 8,000 acres.

The architecture is AMAZING!

As for the cost to build or cost to operate, supposedly "they don't know." But being privately owned, I'm positive its more a matter of they don't want to say. I will say admission with an advance purchase discount was $45.

Memorial Day at 7am we (Jessica, Spencer in the white striped shirt, and I) met at Brett's house (far back) and picked up Jake (guy in blue) and drove the three hours to Asheville. I was awake for about the first hour, then I crashed on Jessica's shoulder and had a lovely nap.

So ZERO photos were allowed inside but this is the balcony in back and we were allowed pictures there.

Not only was it completely picturesque, Brett was a total sport and took tons of pictures for me.

So the house included an indoor pool with underwater lighting (remember this is 1895), a bowling alley, an exercise room, a two-story library, a bakery kitchen, a rotisserie kitchen, a fruit kitchen, a vegetable kitchen, and hundreds of other rooms - 250 to be exact. To the right of the house are the horse stables that have been converted into stores and a restaurant. The courtyard scene reminded me of Europe.

I had the BBQ with all the fixings and for the first time had collared greens. I really liked them, the South definitely agrees with me.
