So something you should know about me, I DESPISE debt! This was instilled in me by my parents. I borrowed money from them a couple times over the years, but always paid them back fast as lightening. I had to borrow money for my senior year of college, the largest amount of debt I had ever had up to that point. I disliked this but there are a few things I believe are okay to do with debt. So when I applied to my graduate program I realized this time, I was going to have to take out a real INTEREST ACCRUING VERY LARGE loan, aaaahhhhh! More than a little scared, I was FREAKED OUT!!! I cried, I screamed, I shook, I was one hot mess! This stress motivated me to switch universities to a less expensive one days before classes started. And in the end it was the best move for me. Instead of having to take out $40,000 I only had to take out $25,500. I also got a great job during school and put all my extra nickels and dimes to my loan, so I had $5,500 paid off before I graduated. Hadn't won the war, but I won the battle - graduated with less debt than I started with.
Then I got a job and started working hard at paying that debt off and.....I lost a battle, my car died. Frustrated! After $6,000 spent on a new-to-me car, I realized I wasn't going to make my May deadline. I was right, I didn't make the May deadline, the one year from graduation mark. BUT September 30, 2011 I made my final payment!!! War won! Only four months behind, but you know what they say, shoot for the moon, even if you fail you'll land among the stars. I know many people years out of college still with student loans. So I feel GREAT! A major goal crossed off. SUCCESS! Thus, financial freedom, almost... I still owe my parents, but that will happen soon. Right now I'm just enjoying this accomplishment.
